Tropical parasites and God's heart

Students at NTM's Missionary Training Center gain insights on many aspects of missionary life.

Michael and Stacy Creech say they will spare us the gory details.

But the topic in Field Health class was tropical parasites. More specifically, worms. “Suffice it to say,” Stacy writes, “there are some nasty diseases out there!”

The class includes a very informative presentation. “The details I’m thoughtfully leaving to your imagination,” Stacy continues.  At the end of the class, the speaker “thanks us all for being willing to pursue overseas missions.”

Stacy wants to jokingly reply that he has managed to convince half the class that God probably wants them to do something else with our lives.

“Jokes set aside, though, I’m grateful. This class, and many others recently, have forced me to really think about why I want to be a missionary. I’m thankful for the opportunity that we have at the training center to assess and push ourselves, to learn and grow and to become fully convinced not only of what we’re doing with our lives, but why we’re doing it,” Stacy adds.

When asked to elaborate on the why, Stacy replies that she and Michael decided early in their relationship that they wanted to have a part in sharing the Gospel with isolated people groups who have no hope of hearing it without someone going to tell them.

“We have chosen to pursue missionary work because we firmly believe that the Bible shows God’s heart for the world.”

Stacy says she can remember, as a child of missionaries, growing up among people who didn’t have the hope of the Gospel. The hopelessness in their death wails and seeing their fear as they spoke of the different jungle spirits that they lived in bondage to still grips her heart with the urgency of the ministry God is training them to do.

“Knowing that there are others out there, living and dying without the hope of Christ, keeps us focused on the task before us.”
