Blow the Cake

Missionary Joy Manda, who teaches missionary children in the Philippines, takes every opportunity to make friends and build relationships.

Recently she was able to accompany her Filipino friend Eya to a birthday party for a little boy. The party was a typical celebration in the Philippines. Joy learned some new traditions.

"The party was a rather traditional Filipino first birthday party with a few twists," wrote Joy. "They had some traditional games for all the children in attendance. They had lots of traditional foods like spaghetti and pancit as well as a whole roasted young pig, vegetables and buko salad. There was also cake, and when it was time for the candle they said, 'Lets sing and James is going to blow the cake.' They don't say blow the candles out here they say blow the cake."

Joy and Eya then watched the children play some of the traditional games played at parties and other events in the Philippines.

Then Joy and Eya hopped on a jeepney, a typical form of transportation in the Philippines, and went to the nearest mall. Joy had invited her landlord and family to dinner and wanted to shop for food. Eya will prepare a traditional grilled fish dinner and chicken soup while Joy contributes a more American style salad and dessert.

Pray for Joy as she studies culture and language and builds friendships among the people in her neighborhood.
