Get Ready to Write

NTM founder Paul Fleming types a letter in British Malaya circa 1940

It’s a special thing to get a letter these days.

If a personal, handwritten letter can light up your day, imagine what it can do for a missionary who’s moved across the country or across the sea.

So in the spirit of International Correspondence Writing Month (InCoWriMo), which is February, we want to make it as easy as we can for you to send a letter to a missionary.

In fact, since InCoWriMo encourages people to write a letter each day in February, we want to equip you to write 28 letters to 28 missionaries in the month. If that sounds daunting, remember: It takes only one letter to start.

And think about what writing a letter to a missionary every day could do for you:

  • You’ll get in the habit of taking the time and effort to write letters.
  • You’ll reinforce relationships and build new ones.
  • You’ll forge heart connections with God’s work around the world.

If you’re with us so far, you probably have a lot of questions. So let us help you answer them.

Who do I write to?

You probably don’t know 28 missionaries. If you do, and you have addresses for them already, great! You’re all set. Most of us will need more help, however.

Church leaders or friends who care about missions might be able to help. You could write to missionaries that your church or your friends support.

But if none of those work for you, or you come up short on names, here’s a simple solution. NTM’s Missionaries page displays a random sampling of missionaries each time it’s loaded. Keep refreshing the page until you get all the names you need. We’ll give you their addresses in a moment here. For now, go to:

usa.ntm.org/missionaries

Note the name and country where each serves. If they’re in the USA, make note of where they serve in the USA.

What do I use to write to them?

You don’t need any kind of fancy, light-weight paper or special envelopes. A sheet or two of paper and a standard envelope will weigh, in most cases, one ounce or less and go first class for a set rate: $1.15 for addresses outside the USA, $0.49 within the USA.

Envelopes and stationery can be found at most general merchandise or office supply stores. But don’t feel that you have to use fancy stationery. If someone sends me a letter, I’m grateful even if it’s written on tree bark.

The folks over at InCoWriMo are keen on fountain pens, and so am I, but you can use a cheap ballpoint or rollerball if you want. Or a fancy one. A pencil or a felt-tip marker. Crayons work too. But don’t cut letters out of a magazine. That’s not handwritten, and it’s kinda creepy. Just use whatever you normally write with.

What about stamps? You can get exact postage at your post office. You can also get stamps there, or you can order stamps online.

What should I write?

Here are some ideas:

  • Tell them you prayed for them and what you prayed.
  • Share your thoughts on a Bible passage you read recently, or how God’s using it in your life.
  • Let them know what’s going on in your church, especially if your church supports them.
  • Tell them about any ministries you’re involved in, and how you’re seeing God work.
  • If you have kids about the same age, write about your kids.
  • Thank them for their service, and be specific. If they have a blog, that will help you find out more about their ministry.

Have another idea? Share it in the comments.

Your letter doesn’t have to be fancy or long. It just has to be personal, from you to them.

What’s the address and postage?

Here are most of the office addresses for writing to NTM missionaries overseas or at USA facilities. first class postage for a standard-size envelope one ounce or less is $0.49 within the USA, and $1.15 to other countries. Please do not send anything other than a letter.
