Mexico Radio Outreach

Project Number: PMX007

Goal: $110,250 Achieved: $67,036
Mexico

There are four least-reached people groups found within the Sierra Madre Mountains of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico (Tarahumara, Tepehuan, Guarajio and Pima). These people groups live scattered out over a vast network of canyons and mountains which makes them very hard to reach via conventional methods. Even with a large team of adequately equipped missionaries and trained indigenous Christian lay workers, the task of reaching the majority of these people with the good news of Jesus Christ could still be decades away from completion.

The desired goal is to use radio to provide consistent and thorough evangelistic and discipleship teaching to these four language groups. Almost all these people currently have access to portable radios and would listen to any form of broadcasting that was available in their heart language.

How You’ll Be Helping

Your gift would allow daily radio teaching in the heart languages of these people groups which will provide a consistent diet of the Word of God that is missing in the various outreaches aimed towards them.

Licensing has been acquired for a cultural/social radio station on the AM frequency of 1620. We are licensed to use up to 10,000 watts of power which would be sufficient to cover the broadcast area. Currently we are using a 900-watt transmitter with limited outreach. By increasing the size of our transmitter to at least 5,000 watts, we could potentially reach the desired areas, but with a 10,000-watt transmitter we would cover the entire area for these four people groups.

Land has been acquired in a centrally located area in regard to these people groups. A transmission tower and small station building have been set up and have been in daily use for approximately two years. With additional funding, a stronger transmitter could be purchased, upgrades to both the antenna and transmission studio could be made and a backup power supply be purchased to allow continued broadcasting during times of commercial power outages. We also have plans to install a solar power system that would allow us to decrease our operating expenses as we can sell power back to the commercial power supply company.

The potential for effectively reaching these people groups would be tremendously improved. A further benefit is that programming will also be in the national language of Mexico (Spanish) and would have the potential to reach many of the Mexican nationals and bilingual tribal people as well.
