92 more Uriay verses

Two Uriay men, Tomas and Wobre, worked with missionaries Lisa Kappeler and Linda Krieg to check 92 verses in the Uriay language for accuracy and understanding.

Linda, an experienced missionary in translation principles, offered to help Lisa check the verses in Romans. "Translating a New Testament epistle is very different from the many narrative passages I’ve already translated," wrote Lisa.

Lisa and her Siawi translation co-workers canoed down the river to meet the Siawi men who would take them to the village where Linda lives. Low water and miscalculation of the route made them backtrack to find the Siawis coming to meet them. Then the trip upstream was slow and difficult.

Arriving at the village in the late afternoon, Lisa began working on the verses in Romans with Linda.

"I was dead on my feet," Lisa wrote. "I made a big stir-fry [for supper] while Linda worked on the computer and asked me questions from across the room. She asked me something at one point, and I finally just told her that
I was too tired to figure out how many packs of noodles we needed in the stir fry -- she needed to make that decision. We finally ate around 8:30 and worked until 10:30 -- but we were fed and ready to go for the next morning."

The check went well and the men easily comprehended the meaning of the verses.

"Tomas was like a sponge soaking up all the truth he possibly could," wrote Lisa. "It was so encouraging to see his hunger for God’s Word."

The trip back to the Uriay village was equally arduous. Lisa and her co-workers arrived home satisfied with the knowledge that there were 92 more verses in the Uriay language ready to be published.

Pray for the missionaries ministering to the Siawi and Uriay people. Pray also for Tomas and Wobre as they help Lisa translate Scripture into their language.
