A strained voice tells the Good News

The Mengen people of Papua New Guinea met eight times last week for evangelistic Bible lessons.

Most of the people are hearing the same lesson twice a day as missionary Dave Wright has been teaching mornings and evenings. Dave plans to up the teaching load to ten lessons per week if his voice can hold out. With no amplification system, his voice has already been strained by the work load.

Dave is hoping to find a small portable amplification system so he can project his voice to those standing outside the classroom. More benches will soon be added to accommodate the crowd.

Dave is encouraged to see several of the elderly attending the teaching, especially the men who have previously been disillusioned with religion.

Among the elderly women, Dave was impressed with one who walked from further away to attend the meetings. Though she can hardly see ten feet in front of her face, she has sometimes made the trip both morning and evening, coming one night in the rain with no flashlight.

Though the teaching is off to a good start, Dave is concerned that he may lose one of his Mengen co-workers for six weeks. Loso, an elementary school teacher who has been a big help with translation work, is being called away to attend an education course.

"I very much depend on him," Dave wrote, "but his job is on the line should he not attend."

Both Dave and Loso are looking to God as the teacher will have to decide this week if he is going to attend the course. Please pray with them about this decision.

Pray too that Dave's voice will hold out and that those who are hearing God's Word will understand the Gospel and place their faith in Christ.
