Coping with difference

Missionaries Nate and Beth Claasen and have realized that things are just different in Papua New Guinea. Nate was reminded of that recently when he smelled something like meat cooking on the backyard grill coming from his printer. Then the pages from the printer began appearing with pieces of baked cockroach on them. A real "computer bug" -- two inches long -- had made its home in the printer again.

Here are a few other reminders that Claasens are "not in Kansas anymore."
Nate wrote:

  • "The power went out four times this morning."

  • "We drink all our milk from a box or from powder."

  • "We shiver when the thermometer drops below 80 degrees (and we are at 5,000 feet)."

  • "A large insect has taken up residence in the tree just outside our bedroom window." Nate had to go out in the middle of the night to throw rocks up in a tree to stop it from singing out for a mate.

  • "Our kids associate standing by the computer with talking to grandparents."

  • "The ham we get here tastes of fish because that is how the store-bought pork meat is fattened."

The Claasens are in their first year in Papua New Guinea. Please pray for them as they continue to get more familiar with their new environment and get more involved in ministry.
