Death produces uproar

A Gavião man died recently causing a series of events in his village in Brazil.

These included running around the village waving arrows, running with logs from their gardens to the village and singing throughout the night for several weeks. It was also necessary to clean the village and build a big hut to house some of the visitors.

Many of these events have spiritual significance and the required rituals keep the people upset and afraid. When the rituals are finished and the final ceremony takes place, the death has been dealt with and village life can return to normal until the next unsettling thing happens.

Missionaries Arnie and Diane Kitchener along with the Gavião believers continue to demonstrate God’s redeeming love to the villagers through their teaching and example.

When 13 believers were baptized on July 4, Arnie wrote, "The singing and testimonies were special that morning, as well as at the communion service that evening,"

One of the young believers, Pojeeh, has a heart for God and now wants to be a pastor when he finishes school. Croc, one of the Gavião Bible teachers, has been discouraged for various reasons. God used Pojeeh’s testimony to renew his joy in continuing to teach God’s Word and in being a godly example.

Please pray that the believers will be a living testimony of God’s grace to the Gaviãos.
