Learning from university students
Missionary Jenny Lowery had an exciting weekend. She attended a party for university students at her local church and found many chances to learn about Bolivian culture and language. She also found that Bolivian college students are just as fun-loving and crazy as American students.
"Last night we had our annual pique loco night," Jenny wrote. "We all sat in a circle and they put a table and chair in the middle with a huge platter of pique macho, a typical Bolivian meal made of hot dogs, beef tips, tomatoes, onions and French fries. It sounds funny, but it's really good."
"We each got a fork and passed a pair of dice around. We each rolled the dice and if we rolled doubles, we got to go up and eat until the next person rolled doubles. We kept going until the platter was all eaten, which was about 35 minutes."
Jenny also learned about the Bolivian's preoccupation with soccer. "I was walking downtown and could hear the crowd going wild at the stadium about a mile away," she wrote. "The home team was winning and it made me smile, living in a country that loves soccer."
Pray that what Jenny is learning will help her in her ministry to missionaries' children. Pray too that she will build strong relationships in the community and model Christ to unbelievers.
