Mengen couple stops listening

Most of the Mengens in a village in Papua New Guinea are consistently attending Bible lessons.

"It has been so encouraging to continue seeing most of our village faithfully attend, rain or shine, for at least one of the lessons each day," missionary Dave Wright wrote.

For each lesson, Dave hangs a large laminated picture on the classroom wall. The pictures illustrate God's truths. Twice a week, he asks a Mengen to volunteer reviewing the pictures with the class. This also gives Dave an opportunity to have a glimpse of the Mengens' understanding of the lessons.

A few young men have stepped up to lead the class in reviewing the lessons.

"[They're] even grasping the themes of God's nature, our sinfulness and the security that is only found in the Redeemer," Dave wrote. "A number of these men were the thieves that had caused the team so many difficulties in the past. This is a glimpse of what God is doing in [their] hearts."

But just when the missionaries take a few steps forward, they have to take a few steps back.

One Mengen couple started attending the Bible lessons but stopped after three weeks to tend to their gardens.

"I was finally able to connect with them on Friday and challenged them that God's Word was so far greater than their gardens and that I'd make a way for them to catch up on what they've missed," Dave wrote.

The couple came to listen to lessons Dave recorded on cassettes and they caught up on four of the lessons, but they stopped following up after that.

"Please pray for them as there's a battle going on and they've again gone back to their garden," Dave wrote. "Please pray that they'd be in class on Monday."
