Mengens want more teaching
A Mengen woman in Papua New Guinea was publicly beaten by her uncle for attending Bible lessons. The woman, in defense, used a stick against her uncle to protect herself.
"[That] caused him to really let loose -- kicking and punching her mercilessly with her screaming on the ground," missionary Dave Wright wrote. "Her husband stood by as did the rest of the village because of cultural taboos -- so sad."
The woman, and her husband as well, still want to hear God's Word.
"They have been a bit reluctant to come initially, but with some encouragement, they have attended faithfully this week," Dave wrote.
In fact, quite a few Mengens have been attending the teachings faithfully.
As Dave teaches on the creation of Adam and stresses that God created Adam in his image in order to have fellowship with Him and to have a relationship with Him, the Mengens are facing new knowledge that contradicts their own perception of God.
"To our Mengen people, God is distant, creating them with inferior ability and thus their whole lives are lived in light of the spirits who are believed to be on hand and helpful if they are able to manipulate them," Dave wrote.
The Mengens are very curious concerning the God the missionaries are teaching them about. Some men said the four lessons provided each week were not enough. They want more.
Dave will soon start teaching about the meaning of death and how Satan is the enemy, always striving to trick people.
"The spirits of the dead [that the Mengens] think they are calling out to are really Satan and his demons tricking them for their demise," Dave wrote. "Please pray for truth to enlighten hearts."
