Not afraid of death now
Gili, who recently understood that Christ died for him, is no longer held captive by the fear that grips his fellow Akolets of Papua New Guinea.
The day Gili put his faith in Christ he couldn’t wipe the huge grin off his face. He kept saying, "I see now. I understand now. I didn’t before - my mind was shut. But now I see."
Afterwards Adam said, "So now where are you going when you die?"
"To Heaven to be with God!" Gili replied. "I don’t have to be afraid anymore. I’m not afraid of dying! Actually I’m looking forward to it!"
The Akolets have feared death for centuries. Gili has talked about the deep fear that he and his fellow Akolet are in bondage to. For him to say so simply and confidently that he is not afraid to die is huge.
The next day he asked Adam, "What about all the Akolet people who have died and haven’t heard this message?"
Adam helped him piece it together bit by bit and Gili replied, "Yeah, how could they not be separated from God? They were all sinners, and they didn’t know about the Rescuer. And the Rescuer is the only way to be made right with God. So they’re all separated from Him forever."
Then Gili paused before saying, "Oh! So that is why you guys have always been so sad when someone here has died. And that’s why you’re always so worried when you hear an old person is sick. Because you are afraid they’ll die and be separated from God forever. That really makes sense now."
Adam assured him that from now on, upon hearing that an old person is sick, he and Gili will go together and talk to that person, trying to share this truth in a short amount of time.
Please pray for Gili’s growth in the Lord and that he will be able to encourage other Akolets to listen to evangelistic Bible teaching when it begins in January.
