Not all fun and games

Chris Walker and his friends from church hiked two hours to reach out to a group in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea.

There, they played a game that the people of that place enjoy. The game involved filling the string bags they carry, known as bilum, with various items such as food, money, matches, soap or knives. Individuals are paired up, introduced with singing and dancing culminated by exchanging bilums. This causes more celebrating and more jocularity.

Chris was somewhat unfamiliar with the process but went along with it so he could learn this new adventure into Papua New Guinean culture. At the end of the ceremony, Chris had two live chickens, four large bags of garden produce and a hand-carved bamboo fork.

Chris and the pastor of the church, Joel Kamaya, were asked to speak to the large crowd gathered for the game.

“This provided a wonderful opportunity to announce an upcoming outreach that the church would be starting in the area by sending teachers in a few months,” wrote Chris. “Once the teachers begin, they plan to teach scripture chronologically for the first time in that area.”

Pray for the Bible teachers from the local church as they reach out to the remote village where they will be using the Firm Foundation Bible lessons.
