Preparing to teach literacy

About 15 Mwinikas in Mozambique may soon be learning to read and write their own language.

Missionaries want to start literacy classes in August. They are now in the final stages of developing the materials and making preparations.

"It is a huge job with many little details that need to fall into place before we can start the teaching in a few weeks," wrote Nadia Hattingh.

Francois Hattingh, with the help of his Mwinika co-workers, is translating the teacher’s manual. Nadia is working on the pre-literacy materials and Elin Henderson is developing the student workbook. There is still much to do, including the printing.

Francois and Elin will teach the literacy course at the beginning. Nadia will take Francois’ place when her language abilities improve.

"We want the literacy training to directly precede the Bible teaching," wrote Nadia. "The whole point of teaching the Mwinikas to read and write their own language is so that they can read and understand the Scriptures that we are translating."

The missionary team would like to start evangelistic Bible teaching in November. Phil Henderson is translating the Scriptures for the lessons while Francois will develop the curriculum.

"We are so exited that the time has finally come for the Mwinikas to hear the Good News," Nadia wrote.

"All this work will of course be without any purpose, if the Mwinikas are not motivated and ready to read their own language. Please pray that the local leaders will be interested and motivated to start soon. We have not been able to get them all together yet, and the time is running out. They need to take the responsibility and decide who will come to the first literacy class. Pray that the right people will come."

And pray too for good time management.
