Reflecting on the past, planning for the future

As the Guanano church in Brazil met on New Year’s Day, Kiri’s testimony reminded the believers of how God has changed their lives.

Kiri, a single mother with two daughters, had some unsaved relatives staying with her for the holidays. She sat them all down in a candlelit room and passed out some bread and pop.

"When we lived in our village in Colombia," Kiri told her guests, "New Year’s celebration meant one thing, a drinking party. We would drink too much, then we would fight and people would get hurt. We never got sad about this for very long because we didn’t know any better. We were living in darkness and we didn’t know any other way.

"But then God sent Barry [Spor] and Lindy [Drake] and their families. Just like God sent Moses to bring the Israel people out of slavery, he sent the missionaries to bring us out of the darkness into the light. Now that we live in the light we have no more desire to spend New Year’s the way we did in the past. It’s like we have been set free. We have the Lord to thank for that."

As the missionary team ministers to the Guananos in 2010 they would like to accomplish several things:

  • Teach the books of Galatians and Colossians to the believers.

  • Finish the evangelistic Bible study and baptize new believers.

  • Finish improvements being made to the translation of Exodus through Judges.

  • Continue new translation in 1 Samuel through 2 Chronicles.

Please pray that the Spors and Drakes will be encouraged and strengthened for the work ahead and pray that the Guanano believers will continue to grow in the Lord.
