Siars believe an ancestor created the world
The Siar people of Papua New Guinea believe that one of their ancestors, Suilik, created the oceans and land.
Suilik lifted a rock from a nearby village and salt water gushed out from underneath creating the oceans, and sand was thrown in places to create the continents.
"I have been told many times by different people in our village [that] Suilik is our God and now many who are familiar with portions of the Bible are calling Jesus, Suilik," missionary Chris Lujan wrote. "One of the many inconsistencies between God's story and theirs is that God used nothing and, quite frankly, needed nothing to create. This is just one example of their belief system and worldview that we are trusting God to change in His time and according to His Word."
Chris, along with his wife Erin and their co-workers Lane and Karrie Sanford, are looking forward to upcoming workshops that will help them in teaching the Siars about the true God and His hand in creating the world they live in today.
In May, the missionaries will be learning how to set up a Siar literacy program in the village.
"Even though many people in our village can read the trade language, most have never [seen] their own language written," Chris wrote. "We believe this will be a stepping stone for the Siar to truly understand God's Word because they will be able to read it for themselves."
In October, the missionaries will attend a workshop for translation. They are looking forward to bringing a group of their Siar friends to receive training as well.
"This will be a great opportunity for us to continue building God-honoring relationships, and at the same time, we will get another opportunity to work hand-in-hand with our [Siar] friends."
Please pray that God will reveal his Truth to the Siars and they will realize Jesus is not Suilik, but their Savior, who sacrificed His life so they could live.
Also pray for wisdom and clarity for the missionaries as they train to teach the Siars literacy and as they prepare to translate the Word of God.
