Strong man now a strong believer

Agosto, a Yanomami believer in Brazil, found true joy after he trusted Christ.

For many years Agosto was hardened to the Gospel message, preferring the witchdoctors he could see to the God he could not see. He was extremely strong and had struck down many with his battle clubs and is said to have killed a man. His body bears the scars of a hardened warrior and sin was unchecked in his life.

One night missionary Mike Hartman was burdened for Agosto and prayed for him several times during the night. At 7 the next morning, Agosto was on the Hartmans' front porch asking to begin listening to God's Word.

When Mike and his wife, Diane, were preparing to leave for home assignment, Agosto came to Mike and told him, "I don't want you to worry about me when you are gone. I will never leave the Lord. I am going to be true to Him."

On a recent night fishing trip, Agosto told two Yanomami pastors about his former fear of the spirits and of witchdoctors. He told them that the witchdoctors always told him that they could go into the woods and kill people. He feared that the spirits would come for his soul and just take it away.

"Now I know why the witchdoctors always said they would kill people by going in the spirit a long distance away," Agosto told the pastors. "That way we could never find out if they actually killed the person or not. They never killed anyone like that. They just lied to us."

"I am not afraid anymore. I am really joyful. I know now that it is God who is the Great Spirit. I am His now. He is the One who protects me."

Pray for Agosto to grow in his faith and tell others about his triumph over fear. Pray too for Mike and Diane Hartman as they minister to the Yanomami people in Brazil.
