Tackling a tricky translation

The Embera translation committee has entered a rough passage.

Embera believers, NTM missionary Doug Schermerhorn and Wycliffe missionary Chaz Mortensen are revising the Embera Scriptures. The revision will be more usable for the 500 believers among the 15,000 Emberas in Panama, and will be accessible in the dialect used by the 25,000 Emberas of Colombia.

The translation team is working through Exodus 28, about the tabernacle.

"It is described in detail here but even the best described object is difficult to picture," Doug wrote. "Imagine trying to describe something that your listener has never seen and expect him to understand exactly how it looks. That is the problem we are presently facing."

Detailed drawings help, but since the drawings are interpretations of what the tabernacle looked like, details in the drawings differ.

"So be in prayer for us as we finish this very difficult portion," Doug wrote. "We would like to have Exodus finished by July 1."
