Teachers set a higher standard

Last week missionaries Mike and Diane Hartman suddenly found a group of Yanomami literacy teachers on their porch asking for a meeting.

"I felt sort of like I was being called to the principal’s office," Diane wrote. "I couldn’t imagine what they were calling a meeting for."

The group wanted to replace one of the teachers. He had been talked to five times and hadn’t listened. The teachers felt they had given him plenty of opportunity.

"We were glad that they were taking ownership of the school and that they are holding the teacher to a higher standard," Diane wrote.

The group already had another teacher picked out to take his place, but the job to train him fell to the Hartmans. They would need to spend a lot more time in the classroom.

Sunday night, the Hartmans discovered they would be two teachers short this week with a new class of 20 students starting. One of the teachers, Simao, was taking his 13-year-old son out for medical tests and treatment. Another teacher notified them that he wasn’t going to be able to teach after all.

Please pray that good and faithful teachers can be found so the Yanomamis can learn to read God’s Word.
