What's with the frog?
The Akolets trace their ancestry back to animals. Each clan has their own animal, which they are also forbidden to eat.
Sapu, an Akolet man, explained the origins of his people in the cockatoo clan. Sapu said a frog came upon a creek and considered jumping across it, but it was too wide, so he swam instead.
Two women came to the creek and saw the frog swimming.
They decided to separate and start their own clans. One woman started the bat clan and the other woman started the cockatoo clan.
Missionaries Adam and Julie Martin were confused. They wondered where the two women came from and what made them decide to start clans with those particular animals. What did the frog have to do with anything?
"The answers: we have no idea," Adam and Julie wrote. "The understanding and insight we are trying to gain in not just this, but in every area of the Akolet people's lives, comes very slowly … but by the grace of God we are making progress."
Please pray for Adam and Julie as they continue to learn the language and culture of the Akolets so the Truth of Christ can be proclaimed.
