'Why … am I doing this'

Missionaries Simon and Lavonne Challinor and their boys huddled under a black garbage bag in a dugout canoe as they made their way back to a Naso village in Panama.

The Challinors made a quick trip to Panama City to renew their visas. Now as they headed home, the persistent rain and rushing current caused Simon to ask himself, "Why in the world am I doing this?"

"The river was twice its normal width with rapids coming fast and furious," Simon wrote. "When our boat driver, Nicanor, got off the bus -- he had been to town to buy the gas for the trip -- he said that we could travel upriver, but he had bought an extra gallon of gas because of the extra strong current."

"The most concerning part for me was when … Nicanor had to navigate a long stretch of current full of white water followed by a bend that was also raging white water. We were thankful for the Lord having answered our prayers when we safely disembarked at the port."

Simon and Lavonne recorded the Naso New Testament for their "Faith Comes by Hearing" project. Working closely with a Naso believer, Tito, and others reminds them why they are willing to endure hardships and danger -- to bring God’s Word to the Nasos.

Simon and Lavonne continue to have Bible studies with Pipon and Maria, Juan and Hortencia and Teodocia, who are all faithful in studying and have a strong desire to hear God’s Word.

Pray for Simon and Lavonne as they minister to the Naso people. Pray also for the Naso believers as they grow in their walk with the Lord.
