Why all the beads?
Adam and Julie Martin took a string of 6,010 multi-colored beads into the Akolet village in Papua New Guinea where they live, and presented them this week as an attention-getter.
"This incredibly long bead rope was strung with love and sent to us at our request by a group of friends in the USA," the Martins wrote. "Today [Monday] we only unwound it partially to give the Akolet people a taste of what they’d be seeing next week when we explain what they represent.
"Afterward, the crowd of people around us buzzed with excitement. After all, whose curiosity would not be piqued by something so strange and eye-catching ... and long?"
So why all the beads?
"Well, 6,010 coconuts would have been too unwieldy," Adam and Julie wrote.
And the couple never actually explained it, except to say that they will tell the Akolets more this coming Monday, as they whet the people’s appetites for Bible teaching due to begin in January.
Pray that many Akolets come to the Monday morning meetings. "Pray ... that our words communicate clearly, and that the beads would serve as a big attention-grabber for the coming Bible lessons," the couple wrote.
